Additional supportive therapies

Any method that boosts your health and makes you feel better is a valuable complement to conventional cancer treatment. Some comple- mentary therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy, and sauna, are not just a way to improve your well-being and quality of life, but also offer a huge added value to any cancer treatment.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a centuries-old traditional Chinese remedy in which needles are inserted into the body at specific points in order to activate different physical processes. It is the most widespread form of comple- mentary therapy, and is also used as a supplementary treatment for cancer patients.

Massage

Massage therapy is increasingly used as a supportive treatment for cancer, including in renowned cancer centres. It was originally used on account of its soothing and relaxing effect: massage makes you feel better and makes you more able to deal with the stress and anxiety you inevitably suffer when you have been diagnosed with cancer. However, massage does much more than help you relax and make you feel good.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the internal or external use of the essential oils of plants to prevent or treat health problems or diseases.

Sauna

Sauna is a form of thermotherapy or heat therapy which has been used for thousands of years in different parts of the world as a purifying and health-boosting social and spiritual ritual. It comes in various forms, such as the Finnish sauna, the Turkish hammam, and the Russian banya, each of which uses a different type of building, a different heat source, and different variations in temperature and humidity.

Phytotherapy

Phytotherapy or herbal medicine is the treatment of symptoms and illnesses with the help of plants or plant extracts such as herbs and spices. Herbal medicine is actually the original, traditional form of medicine that has been practised for thousands of years. Modern medicine as we know it today developed from herbal medicine. The active compounds in plants were first extracted from plants in order to make more potent medicines. Later, they were synthetically reproduced.

Fasting

Fasting is an age-old practice which is normally regarded as a form of purification or purging. It not only has a religious or ritual value, it is also very healthy.

Sleep

A good night’s sleep is one of the most important – and one of the most neglected – aspects of health. On the one hand, good sleep is a reflection of good health. On the other, it can help you to stay healthy. Getting enough sleep and having a regular sleep pattern is extremely important, because it gives your body the chance to recover from strain and exertion and gives your immune system the best possible support.
