Green tea: A beverage with special medicinal properties

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is a healthful beverage that has been enjoyed for centuries in the East and is becoming increasingly popular in the West. The unique blend of polyphenols in green tea has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune-boosting effects that support the health of all organs and body systems. The therapeutic potential of green tea is often underrated because it is “just a beverage”. However, the special medicinal properties of green tea should not be underestimated. Green tea, or green tea extract, appears to be a “medicine” that can be used for many health conditions and diseases.

Green tea comes from the dried leaves of the tea plant (Camel- lia sinensis). Unlike black tea, which comes from the same plant, the leaves are not fermented, so they retain their green color. Green tea has a higher polyphenol content than black tea.

The beneficial effects of green tea are mainly attributed to the catechins, such as epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

EGCG is known to be a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflam- matory and is one of the most studied natural anticancer compounds (Musial C, 2020).

Broad-spectrum properties of green tea

Drinking green tea or taking a green tea extract daily has a very broad effect on the body thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties, which are the basis of all its preventive and therapeutic effects.
