Resveratrol: a remarkable “anti-aging” nutrient

Resveratrol is a polyphenol found primarily in grapes, berries and peanuts. It is known as a nutrient that inhibits the aging process and keeps the body “young”. This is due to its broad antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective and hormone regulating properties.
Resveratrol has an effect similar to that of exercise and calorie restriction. It protects all body systems from damage and premature aging. The health promoting properties of resveratrol are so well established that this nutrient is increasingly being used not only as a dietary supplement but also as a nutraceutical or “food medicine”.

Polyphenol

Resveratrol is a so-called “stilbene”, that belongs to the large group of polyphenols. It’s produced by plants to protect themselves from damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, fungi, viruses, bacteria, and insects. In our bodies, it does something similar, protecting cells and tissues from various forms of damage or “stress”.

The remarkable properties of resveratrol

Resveratrol has beneficial effects on various processes in the body, including inflammation, the antioxidant system, hormone activity, the nervous system, brain function, the cardiovascular system and blood sugar levels. This has been demonstrated in clinical studies, which show that resveratrol supplementation improves various parameters in individuals with certain health problems or pathologies, even when relatively low doses of 10 to 100 mg per day are taken for relatively short periods of several weeks to a few months (Brown K, 2024; Meng X, 2020; Ramírez-Garza SL, 2018).
