With small steps towards new eating habits

It is not easy – and often even very difficult – to get children with autism to try new foods or adopt different eating habits. It is not a good idea to expect these children to suddenly start eating completely differently. Even small changes can be met with tantrums and defiant behavior, which quickly makes you inclined to give up on teaching your child healthier habits.

It is recommended to work in very small steps and phases, especially with very picky eaters. Give your child enough time to get used to a new food and become familiar with its taste, smell, texture, etc. Try introducing it in different ways to find out what is best received or which strategy works best.
Gradually replace familiar ingredients in dishes so that it’s barely noticeable that anything has changed.

It is not an easy task, but it is absolutely worthwhile to teach children with autism healthy eating habits that they can maintain for the rest of their lives. As soon as the healthier diet begins to have a positive impact on physical and mental health, it will become increasingly easier to introduce new foods and continue eating healthily.
